Withington was mentioned in the Domesday book (known as Widingtune at the time), and was a tiny village until relatively recently. In 1858, despite the tiny population there was a diverse number of occupations, some of which were:

William Bowen – Basket Maker; Thomas Carver – Tailor; John Norman – Shoemaker; Richard Poytherus – Blacksmith; Hook and Pritchard – Tanners; James Godsall – Wheelright; William Edwards – Cooper.
