The church of St. John at Pencombe was formerly 12th century but was completely rebuilt in the mid 19th century

This is the old limestone font from the original church, which was rescued from the churchyard.

George and Elizabeth Jordan

of this Parish

who led by a spirit of enterprise and a

passionate love of knowledge accompanied

Mr Richard Lander

in his 3rd and last attempt to explore the

interior of Africa, and there fell a sacrifice

to the baneful influence of the climate,

dying at Damuggoo on 21 November 1832

in the 20th year of his age, to the inexpressible

grief of his afflicted parents who in him deplore

the loss of a dutiful and affectionate son.
