He was a resident of Ross on Wye who started humbly as a Railway Porter and went on to be the last British Governor of Bengal, serving from 1946 to 1947 under the rule of the British Empire before India gained independence.
He was given the titles of the Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, and also Knight Grand Commander of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire.
He also was President of the National Union of Railwaymen in England.
