There was at least one in each village and more in the larger towns – making wooden barrels for the storage of food and drink. The expertise and sheer physical strength required to make casks well and completely watertight meant that the apprenticeship was necessarily long…….about 7 years in fact – but this produced a man who was able to work without drawings or instructions, and who could fashion a wooden container for any purpose purely by eye and skill.
