The original church in Ganarew was dedicated to St. Luke but became so dilapidated that it was torn down in 1848, and St. Swithins was built in its place

It was said that the old church was unsightly and falling down, but it was not until the death of Major Marriott, a much loved man of the district,  that anything was done about it.

The Major’s widow decided that the full restoration of the church, where he loved to worship, would be the most fitting tribute to his memory, and to this end she completely funded the cost of the new church.

The Bishop of Hereford consecrated the new church in October 1849.
